Gryllus Campestris bioacoustic research

Bionics and Bioacustics

"Be a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy."

Stephen Conez

From these words, we've decided to do something without expecting a miracle in life for us. The study of nature is fascinating, and if it is done thoroughly, it reveals amazing things. In a non-formal educational form, we've welded ourselves into a team, determined to research and to apply theory in practice.

"Human subtlety...will never devise an invention more beautiful, more simple or more direct than does nature, because in her inventions nothing is lacking, and nothing is superfluous."

Leonardo Da Vinci

In our team there is no leader, we are all friends and collegues. The human being has observed nature since the beginning of time. He has extracted and applied a lot of inventions. The radar is an application of the bat world, sonar, of the dolphin world, and planes are clearly inspired from the world of birds. Even though studies are made with the highest technology available, the discoveries made are just bits of what really exists. Whales, dolphins, ants and many more animals still have indecipherable behaviors, periodically appearing things that amaze us. We have chosen to study the field cricket (Grillus campestris), because it is an interesting being. Despite the research made by universities and research institutes, there still remain things that are undiscovered. Our study approach is based on ethology and bioacoustics. The manner in which nature created the cricket is full of mistery, a mistery that is not yet fully unraveled. Why is the ear situated on the front legs? does he indeed have 4 songs? why these 4 songs are in trains of pulses and do they have other purposes beside attracting females, communicating and warning other crickets of possible dangers? So many fascinating things, so many challenges. We will work in the field, as well as in a laboratory. Having knowledge of electronics, we will build and use the necessary equipments ourselves. We will learn to observe, analyze and respect nature. And in the end, whatever the outcome will be, we will definitely become other people, better ones. More tolerant, professional and with a lot more respect for what surrounds us.
